The Kickstart event was a brilliant example of bringing people together, sharing ideas and agreeing the main priorities for Wirral’s volunteering strategy. I really enjoyed the conversations I had with many in attendance about making volunteering easier, more flexible and open to everyone. A key reflection from some attendees was that many people already do amazing things in their communities, but may not call themselves volunteers, while others would love to help, but need opportunities that fit around work, family or caring responsibilities.
The event showed that a successful strategy must support both volunteers and organisations, and reflect the different ways people want to help. It also reminded us how important it is to build the strategy together. The evidence presented last week can help us have useful conversations, but it doesn't give us all the answers.
I left feeling excited and encouraged by the energy and commitment in the room. Our goal is clear: to create flexible, welcoming and rewarding opportunities so that even more people can get involved and make a real difference.
