Updated guidance to help charities stay compliant and maintain public trust
A new Code of Fundraising Practice came into effect on 1 November, introducing important updates that modernise fundraising standards and help charities ensure their fundraising activity remains compliant, transparent and ethical. These changes are designed to reflect the evolving ways that charities engage supporters and to provide clearer guidance in an increasingly digital fundraising environment.
The new Code moves to a principles-based framework that places greater emphasis on core values such as honesty, openness, respect and legality. This shift encourages charities to think beyond compliance and to embed these values at the heart of their fundraising practice.
One of the most notable improvements is the inclusion of clearer, more practical guidance on digital fundraising. This recognises the growing importance of online platforms, social media and virtual campaigns in generating income and engaging supporters. The new Code also places a stronger focus on the safety and wellbeing of fundraisers, ensuring that everyone involved in fundraising activity is protected and supported.
Importantly, the revised Code is far more user-friendly and easier to navigate. It provides straightforward advice and examples that can help organisations assess their own practices and make improvements where needed. The Fundraising Regulator has also included resources to support ongoing monitoring and due diligence, helping charities to stay compliant and maintain high standards over time.
