Helping Households Through Crisis: Household Support Fund 2025–26

Wirral Council has been awarded £5.37 million by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to support local residents through the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. This funding, available from April 2025 to March 2026, is being channelled into a broad package of support for those most in need across the borough.

The Household Support Fund enables direct investment into local community infrastructure, helping people with essentials like food, fuel and household items, as well as wider financial and housing advice.

What support is available?

A portion of the funding will go directly to community groups through a Small Grants Programme, managed by Wirral CVS. Groups can apply for up to £20,000 to provide food, essential items and wider welfare support. There will be only one funding round this year, covering both summer and winter, with all funds to be spent by March 2026. You can apply for this Small Grants Programme by clicking the link below:

Local organisations and charities will also play a leading role in delivering services including:

  • Food support via Neo Community, including hampers during school holidays and pantries for schools and care leavers.

  • Fuel and utility debt help, including vouchers and energy advice, through partners such as Citizens Advice Wirral, Involve Northwest and Energy Projects Plus.

  • White goods and household essentials for people in crisis, via North Birkenhead Development Trust and St Vincent de Paul Society.

  • Targeted support for older people, including nutrition, essential items and carer support, through Age UK Wirral.

  • Housing, financial and heating advice, alongside crisis repair schemes and income maximisation support.

A share of the funding has also been set aside to support wider prevention work in housing, homelessness and children’s services.
