Transforming a Nightclub into a Community Beacon for Change
Weapons Down Wirral CIC has taken a bold step toward creating a safer, stronger community by opening its permanent home in Birkenhead. The former Stairways Nightclub has been transformed into Argyle Community Fitness, a modern space that is far more than just a gym. It’s a welcoming hub where people can find discipline, purpose and hope for a brighter future.
Breaking Cycles & Creating Change

At the heart of Weapons Down Wirral’s mission is a commitment to reducing weapons crime and empowering individuals (especially young people) through boxing and personal development. Their approach combines practical skills with mentorship, workshops and community outreach, fostering positive relationships and helping those most at risk make informed choices. By promoting confidence and teaching conflict resolution, the initiative aims to break cycles of violence and create lasting change.
Many of the young people they support face significant challenges, including a lack of positive role models and, in some cases, conditions such as autism or ADHD. Some are already involved with the criminal justice system, while others are at risk of entering it. Weapons Down Wirral believes everyone deserves access to opportunities that build resilience and open doors to a better future, and their new facility is designed to provide exactly that.
Andy's Story
Founder Andy Groom knows first-hand the impact of weapons crime. His own journey from a troubled youth and time in prison to becoming a community leader fuels his passion for change. “Sharing my story is my way of helping others choose a different path—one built on respect, discipline, and hope instead of fear and violence”, Andy explains. His vision, combined with the transformative power of boxing, inspired the creation of Weapons Down Wirral.
The response from the community has been incredible. In just a short time, more than 20 volunteers, tradespeople and local businesses came together to turn an old nightclub into a vibrant fitness and support centre. Their efforts reflect the spirit of collaboration and determination that defines this initiative.
