Exploring some of the unsung heroes of volunteer organisations
Volunteering is often celebrated through the visible contributions of frontline volunteers who give their time delivering services, raising funds or supporting communities directly. Yet, behind every successful VCFSE organisation sits a group of individuals whose influence is less visible but equally vital. These are trustees and committee members who are the backbone of volunteering, and they provide the governance, direction and accountability that allow VCFSE organisations, and the volunteers within them, to have meaningful impact for the community.

Trustees rarely seek the spotlight. They are strategic leaders who operate behind the scenes, ensuring that an organisation remains true to its purpose. This strategic oversight is what keeps organisations grounded. Volunteers power the day-to-day activity, but trustees ensure that effort translates into meaningful, sustainable impact.
Trustees are the guardians of values and objectives, preventing “mission drift,” where an organisation loses focus over time. This is especially important in a sector often influenced by funding pressures and
increasing community needs, and evolving expectations. Trustees also uphold integrity and are responsible for ensuring ethical decisions, compliance with regulations and sound governance in their organisations.

A well-governed organisation creates clarity and confidence. Volunteers are more likely to stay engaged when they understand the direction, feel safe, and see impact from their efforts. In this way, trustees indirectly influence every volunteer experience.
It’s important to remember: trustees are volunteers too. They give their time, share expertise, and carry significant responsibility often alongside full-time jobs and personal commitments.

Volunteering is powered by passion, generosity and community spirit, but is sustained by structure, leadership, and accountability. Trustees provide that foundation. They ensure that every hour volunteered, every pound raised, and every service delivered contributes to something meaningful and enduring.
So while they may not always be visible, trustees are undeniably essential. They are the backbone that holds everything together quietly enabling the voluntary sector to make a lasting difference.
